On The Local Level…

It’s just so easy to point out ineptitude.

There has been build up for tonight’s high school district championship volleyball game. With the local paper serving both schools, there’s always a little bit of competition going back and forth between schools though I’ve never seen any high school coach publicly rag on a team in the paper before. Ryan Welser, head coach of the Grosse Pointe South Blue Devils, commented:

Assuming the game against Sterling Heights doesn’t have any impact on the division standings, which we hope it does, but we would need some help,” Welser said before the Stallions wrapped up the division crown. “Then we still look at it as a very important game for us. We know Sterling is as good, or better, than any team we’re going to see in the district playoffs. If we can got in there and get a five-game match with them, then I think that’s going to help our confidence too. It’s the perfect chance for us to play a game like that against a very good team.

To give this comment context, Grosse Pointe North, a city rival, had just lost a very close game while Grosse Pointe South had just beaten Sterling Heights. GPN and GPS are planned to meet again in the district finals.

Apparently Welser enjoys taking jabs at high schools girls (pun to Bob Bopp intended).  Additionally, Coach Welser takes pleasure in yelling at referees. To be fair, it’s high school volleyball and there are bad calls here and there but most coaches respectfully discuss their problems with the referee. Welser has the habit of standing, pointing, and yelling at all four zebras at once. All in all, Welser has a habit of taking himself to seriously and putting unneeded pressure on his players.

Oh and Grosse Pointe North defeated Grosse Pointe South in 4 games.
